Smolyan and vicinities

Smolyan is a small city high in the Rhodope mountains in the Bulgarian South, not far from the Greek border. It clings to the both sides of the narrow gorge of the river Cherna (Black). Most streets of Smolyan are parallel to each other and interconnected with numerous stairs. You can easily climb a hundred floors a day just by running errands in the city.

Nevyastata (the Bride) rock dominates over the city and provides an amazing viewpoint. The remains of the ancient fortress Kaleto are open for visitors.

20 meters high Smolyan waterfall is located within the city limits, hidden between the residential houses in the Western edge of the city.
